Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans

Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans are a risky treat for muggles and magicians alike. They look like regular jelly beans but some of them taste like things most irregular, such as ear wax, liver and even vomit. Ugh gross!

Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans

The world first heard about Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans from the author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, in her first book,  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. In one scene Ron Weasley warns newbie wizard Harry Potter about the risks involved in eating the beans.

ron weasleyRon says, “You want to be careful with those. When they say every flavor, they mean every flavor - you know you get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe. George reckons he had a bogey-flavoured one once.” (Left:

Despite (or more likely because of) the risk of eating something utterly revolting, Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans are the most popular wizarding treat in Rowling’s magical world.

A man called Bertie Bott invented the candy in 1935. While trying to make tasty sweets that tasted like tasty foods he accidentally made ones that tasted like smelly socks instead. Realizing the appeal of such a high-risk treat, he decided to develop this unique candy, which went on to be marketed with the slogan:

"Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans - A Risk With Every Mouthful!"

Indeed.

The beans appear in the Harry Potter books, movies and video games. They are sold in bags and small striped boxes and come in 149 flavors, which include the following (the only ones mentioned in the books): baked bean, booger, chocolate, coconut, coffee, curry, ear wax, grass, liver, marmalade, pepper, peppermint, sardine, spinach, sprouts, strawberry, toast, toffee, tripe, vomit

albus dumbledore"Ah! Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans! I was most unfortunate in my youth to come across a vomit-flavored one. And since then, I'm afraid I've lost my liking for them. But I think I could be safe with a nice toffee... Hum! Alas! Earwax."

The good news for us muggles is that we can buy Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans in our world too. The Jelly Belly company sells about 30 selected flavors in bags and boxes, just like in the series. Flavors include horseradish, booger, earwax, dirt, vomit, earthworm, spinach, soap and rotten eggs. Are you brave enough to try them?!
