Cedric Diggory: A True Hero

Cedric Diggory epitomizes the fantasy hero. From the first time we meet him in the fourth book by the author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, (
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), he is honest, charming and courageous. And he remains so right up to his untimely death at the hands of Lord Voldemort's quivering servant, Peter Pettigrew.

The son of a friend of Arthur Weasley, Cedric is the Hogwarts champion in the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous game of skill and bravery between pupils from three different schools. He and the other champions (who include a reluctant Harry Potter) display fierce courage in battling dragons, delving into the depths of Hogwarts’ lake and entering a dark and deadly maze where they face their worst fears. But it is Cedric’s sense of fairness more than his courage that makes him a true hero.

Time and again Cedric chooses to do what is right rather than what is in his own best interest. When the bully Draco Malfoy makes badges that say ‘Support Cedric Diggory / Potter stinks', Cedric discourages his friends from wearing them. When Cedric finds out how to uncover the secret to the second challenge in the tournament, he tips off Harry (in return for Harry telling him that dragons were involved in the first task). And after Harry saves his life twice in the maze, Cedric insists that Harry claim the Triwizard Trophy. In the end they agree to take it together, an unfortunate decision that leads to Cedric’s demise.

The trophy turns out to be a portkey. It transports Cedric and Harry to a graveyard where Voldemort and his servant Peter Pettigrew are waiting. On Voldemort’s orders, Pettigrew performs a deadly curse on Cedric, ending his life.

Later, in commemorating Cedric's loss to the pupils, Professor Dumbledore says: “We'll celebrate a boy who was kind and honest and brave and true right to the very end." And that’s just what every hero should be!
