Lord Voldemort

Lord Voldemort represents pure evil. As the dark villain in the Harry Potter series, he is darkness personified, a pitiless monster who feeds on torment and death.

The author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, does a fantastic job of capturing this dark lord on paper, giving us just enough to convey his nature without drowning us in detail.

Throughout the series I waited to see Voldemort’s human side, some indication that he was capable of kindness, mercy, sympathy or compassion. I waited in vain. Not once do we see Voldemort falter from his dark path. Everything he does is to satisfy his lust for power, control and dominance over others.

Even in childhood Voldemort was a monster, which is apparent in the details Rowling gives us of his life, which are as follows:

Lord Voldemort’s real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle. He is conceived as the result of trickery, after his mother uses a love potion to seduce his father. His mother dies shortly after giving birth to him and his father has long since abandoned them both.

Tom goes to live in an orphanage where he gets his kicks from torturing other kids. Once released, he enrols at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There he becomes outwardly a model pupil while secretly continuing his sadistic ways. Driven by hatred for the father and grandparents who abandoned him, he tracks them down and murders them. Thus begins his rise as the dark lord.

On the night that Voldemort murders Harry Potter’s parents for opposing him, he makes a fateful mistake. After killing Mr and Mrs Potter, he
unleashes a deadly curse on the infant Harry, which rebounds on Voldemort and destroys his body (but doesn't end his life), while leaving the child unharmed. In that instance part of Voldemort's soul seeps into Harry Potter, and makes him the one wizard who can destroy Voldemort completely.

From that moment on the two of them are bound together, their destiny’s intertwined. As the prophecy in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix reveals, “Neither can live while the other survives.”

The only thing in the world Voldemort fears is his own demise. And it is this that Harry alone can bring to pass.
